We like to think that we understand what students really want to know about the city they live in, and we believe it
tends to revolve around three things......food, booze and shopping! So if you are new to the area, and would like some advice
on where to go on a Friday night, or which burger van to side step, read on......
Cambridge has a very diverse shopping experience with high street names such as H&M, Topshop, Boots, Office, M&S
and Tesco mixing it with the local more specialised shops. For the more fashion conscious there are retailers such
as Guilo's, Blu Max and Reiss that should sufficiently drain any student loan that is not required for booze or
books. For those who want to save their precious pennies there are more reasonable shops such as River Island, Cult Clothing
and Topshop. Recently a new and very large John Lewis has opened on St Andrews Street. Just down the road there is the
Grafton Centre which is home to over 40 retailers and the Grand Arcade is due for completion shortly. Out of the centre
of town, Mill Road offers anything anyone could ever need in one street. From takeaways, Korean food specialists to quintessential
cafes, there is something for everyone.
Cambridge is home to the Eagle pub, where a certain Watson and Crick sat and discovered
a little thing called DNA. The Eagle is a great example of the majority of pubs in Cambridge, heaped in character and
history and serving a fantastic array of ales. Also worth a look are the Bath House, B-Bar, the Castle, the Slug and
Lettuce, the Granta and most definItely the Mill in summer where many students gather to drink next to the river.
Cambridge has an excellent choice for where to eat. Browns is perhaps at the top end of the scale, situated opposite Fitzwilliam
college and offering good food for a not so student price. Also in that category would be Lochfyne, the excellent fish restaurant,
just down the road from Browns. In the middle of the scale restaurants such as Zizzis, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, The Galleria
and Number 1 Kings Parade offer good food for good value for money. After a night out, however, you'll be looking for something
much cheaper and with much more grease on it. For that, look no further than the famous Gardenias on Rose Crescent, a sure
fire way to cure that inevitable hangover.
- And not to forget....the Punting!
Punting is a challenge any Cambridge University student, any Cambridge resident
or any Cambridge visitor must experience. The opportunity to slowly float past some of the most awe inspiring scenery while
sipping on a glass of Champagne (or two...) cannot be missed. There are many companies, most notably Scudamores, that offer
guided punts or allow customers to take out punts on an hourly basis. A word of warning, if you are a novice and you choose
to punt yourself, you will get wet.
